Ferrymead bridge replacement

The Ferrymead bridge, which carries the bulk of traffic to and from Sumner, Redcliffs and Mt Pleasant, is to be replaced, with work expected to start in the New Year.

In a previous post I recorded the project as a “rebuild”, while now it is being billed as a “replacement”. I assume it is now definitely going to be an all new bridge.

One thing I have to comment on is that it looks a little bland (just like the existing bridge), and it would be good to spice it up a little with a funky design. The original bridge (now standing somewhere in Ferrymead Heritage Park) was a lift bridge, perhaps they could have paid homage to that or something? It is a bit of a gateway, so why not make it worthy of that status?
