It is expected that the Christchurch City Council will adopt the final draft Central City Plan tomorrow, after which it will be presented to the Minister for Earthquake Recovery on 21 December.
“Thursday will be the most significant day for Christchurch since the city was settled in 1850. It is when we, as a Council, adopt the framework that will develop Christchurch into one of the most modern, green cities in the world for the 21st century.” – Bob Parker
A lot rests on this document, as while it is a “Central City Plan” the pillars upon which the plan stand upon will have a significant influence on the form and function of the city as a whole. You only have to have a flick through it to see that is the case, especially in the transport section.
How this goes down with the Minister will be interesting. Hopefully not like a cup of cold sick. According to the Mayor, “the Central City Plan identifies projects and initiatives to be implemented during the next 10 to 20 years which will make Christchurch one of the most exciting, modern and liveable cities in the world“. I hope we are given the chance to achieve that.
