Earthquake or no earthquake, there is no stopping completion of Christchurch’s first Roads of National Significance Project, stage one of the Christchurch Southern Motorway. Now well into its construction phase the project is due for completion in 2013. Beyond then, further stages will take it to beyond Templeton with a final stage being the four-laning of SH1 from that point on to Rolleston.
Check out this video of an aerial view of the construction of the motorway, including the stretch of Halswell Junction Rd that is to be upgraded to provide an interim link with SH1.
I do wonder how much traffic from SH1 will utilise the motorway once the first stage is complete. I would think that it will only start to see substantial traffic shift off the existing route once the second stage is brought online.
