At last! Following the earthquake there is some normal transport news to report on! Work is about to begin on the rebuilding of the Ferrymead bridge, with the contractor setting up offices and a piling crane on site. Its kind of weird to see a normal project going ahead amongst everything else, but comforting too.
The bridge carries 30 000 vehicles a day as well as water, waste and phone lines to the isolated eastern suburbs. Due to the need to maintain regular traffic operation over the bridge, construction will take two years.
