Transport Minister Stephen Joyce has warned that any light rail in Christchurch will have to be funded without government funding during an interview on Radio New Zealand News. Furthermore, Joyce stated that the Christchurch City Council understood and accepted the situation, that they would do it themselves if that’s what they decided.
Joyce made his comments about Christchurch light rail in the midst of voicing his concerns about mayoral candidates, primarily in Auckland, making promises about projects (mostly public transport/rail) which would require significant government funding. He says he is asking for a ‘bit of realism’.
What I cant help but wonder is why Christchurch gets nothing, yet Auckland and Wellington have recently recieved hundreds of millions of dollars toward their rail systems. It simply doesn’t seem right to me.
