Work began today on the upgrade of Hereford St between Oxford Tce & Colombo St. The upgrade includes wider footpaths, new street furniture, new raised planters and cycle stands. The wider footpaths will create a narrower street providing more scope for outdoor dining and creating a slow more pedestrian friendly slow road.
“The redevelopment of Hereford Street, which includes a more narrow road to slow traffic and enhanced public spaces, will help to re-establish this part of the central city as a vibrant retail and leisure destination.” – Christian Anderson, Council Project Management Unit Manager
This project is part of the Councils vision to revitalise the City Centre, providing better access to the CBD for cyclists and pedestrians. This is certainly an initiative I agree with, more city streets could do with a similar upgrade so perhaps this could be the litmus test? Having said that, the timeline is relatively long. Stage two of the project, the section of Hereford St from Colombo St to Manchester St, is not due to begin until mid 2012.
