Rail investigation approved

City Councilors have approved an investigation into inner-city rail options as part of a wider investigation to revitalise central Christchurch. The rail options listed included streetcars, light rail and heavy rail, which illustrates to me that they could be looking at a range of options, from street running trams to utilising existing rail lines. Whatever the outcome might be, it seems to be stressed that this is a long-term project and that funding from elsewhere would be sought (possibly central government and PPP’s?). The costs of rail would be assessed for inclusion in next years council budget.

I do wonder what role other authorities will have to play here, such as Ecan and the Waimakariri and Selwyn District Councils. I guess we will wait and see.
