The Christchurch City Council has voted to retain car park spaces along Lichfield St in favour of removing them to allow the Tram to safely turn from into Poplar St.
The removal of parks was considered to be a better option than having the tram in a live traffic lane, which independent safety auditors had noted as a “serious safety risk”.
According to one Councillor, the availability of parking was necessary for a “vibrant central city”. I think we need to get a little perspective here. The total number of car parks proposed to be removed was… fifteen. There are thousands of car parking spaces in the CBD, in fact the place is built around cars too much in my opinion. The tram will surely bring more business to the area than fifteen car parks could, so why bother to inhibit its safe operation?
