Rail One Step Closer…

The Christchurch City Council is to investigate a light-rail network as part of a range of measures aimed at revitalising the central city.  The Council will be asked to let chief executive Tony Marryatt undertake detailed investigations into a range of key topics, including the “…scope, opportunity, scale and costs of  developing a rail system (including streetcar, light rail and heavy rail)“.

Rail has been talked about for some years now by various local government officials, so it is good to see that moves are being made towards some serious investigation so we can actually see what is being proposed, rather than relying on mere speculation.

This move has Mayor Bob Parkers stamp all over it so it will be interesting to see how his main opponent for this years election, Jim Anderton, views this development. Anyway, watch this space…
