What 50% farebox recovery would cost Chch

Jarbury over at Auckland Transport (which I encourage you to read) has a post on NZTA’s Farebox Recovery Plan, including this image from NZTA:

Quite simply, it’s going backwards, pushing people out of buses and into cars, and the economic losses are massive. The numbers are also a compelling argument for public transport, a +5% change in patronage means ~$8million in benefits for a cost of ~$2million. But a compelling argument and economic benefits aren’t good enough for the Minister of Transport, he much prefers wasting money and damaging services.
