Central city retailers see little benefit from the recently completed City Mall revamp and tram-track extension, according to a recent survey. This is despite the fact that the revamp occurred in the middle of a recession, and the first stage of the tram extension has not even been completed yet! Good grief! There is more;
Retailers also called for more parking spaces in the city centre and free parking to compete with suburban shopping malls.
I understand where this is coming from but I think it misses the point a bit. It’s a gross over-simplification of the doldrums the CBD has been in since the early 1990’s, it simply can’t be summed up by a lack of free parking.
