Work has started on the first stage of Christchurch’s big roading projects, the extension to the Southern Motorway (CSM), four months ahead of schedule.

It does look like the long way round though, but the idea is to draw traffic away from the current corridors; Main South Road, Blenheim Road, and provide a faster route from SH1 to Lyttleton. Also, the Curletts Road interchange will be interesting, the original plan was for a ground-level interchange, but now the motorway will cross above Curletts on the way in. There’ll also be cyclelanes, but I doubt many cyclists would choose to travel this route.

The CSM is due to be completed in 2014.
